Description & Requirements

About the role

CBM is recruiting a Security and Safeguarding Advisor to lead the implementation of its global security and safeguarding strategy, strengthen mitigation measures, and support early-warning systems that keep people, partners and programmes safe. The role works with country offices and focal points across Eastern and Southern Africa to run risk assessments, develop management plans, and build capacity. Safeguarding and security advice will be integrated into project design and proposals.

Key responsibilities

  • Support several designated country offices and partners to develop, update and implement safeguarding and security plans in line with CBM policies.
  • Ensure plans reflect local context and promote disability-inclusive and gender-sensitive practice.
  • Provide training, coaching and guidance to staff and safeguarding or security focal points.
  • Monitor compliance with minimum operational standards and drive continuous improvement.
  • Lead or advise on incident response in close coordination with crisis management teams.
  • Share learning, track emerging risks and strengthen safeguarding and security culture.

What you will bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Administration, Management, Social Sciences or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least five years’ leadership experience in security and/or safeguarding, ideally with an INGO in the region.
  • Proven safeguarding expertise, including risk assessment, incident management and prevention.
  • Strong organisational and personnel security skills, with threat/risk assessment and mitigation systems experience.
  • Track record delivering Security and Safeguarding Plans across diverse contexts, plus training and coaching.
  • Willingness to travel up to 40 percent, including to locations with limited security infrastructure, and to be reachable during emergencies.
  • Identification with CBM’s Christian values and mandate.

What CBM offers

  • A meaningful role within a leading organisation in Disability Inclusive Development.
  • Fair salary and social benefits based on local conditions.
  • An approachable, agile culture with a diverse, supportive team.

How to apply

Applications are made through CBM’s online applicant portal. You will be asked to provide your contact details, upload a CV and covering letter, and include copies of your qualifications and references.

The form includes fields for earliest start date and desired annual salary, both required for submission. It is our understanding that CBM uses these fields to help align information with its internal pay frameworks, rather than as a point of negotiation at this stage. Applicants may wish to enter realistic figures based on their local context and experience level.

The application also includes a section titled Support with a severe disability, where applicants can specify any assistive tools, software or adjustments needed to carry out their work effectively. It is our understanding that this reflects CBM’s commitment to accessibility and inclusion, and that the organisation welcomes applications from people with disabilities and adapts its processes to meet individual needs .

Commentary

What stands out about this role is its timing. CBM has developed a clear and mature approach to security and safeguarding and is investing in strengthening it further across the region. The focus on both security and safeguarding is well balanced, with clear expectations for leadership, capacity building and practical implementation.

The role’s regional scope, combined with CBM’s focus on disability inclusion, makes it a rare opportunity for professionals who value organisational safety, equity and operational delivery in equal measure.
